As we step into a fresh year, I’m reminded again how deeply connected our everyday spaces are—whether it’s a coffee counter, a running path, or a small church hall. Each one becomes a place where people grow, heal, and discover purpose. This month, I’m excited to share what’s unfolding across the three areas that shape so much of my calling.

Coffee's origin is beautifully linked to the inspiring legend of Kaldi, the Ethiopian goat herder who noticed his goats bursting with energy after tasting the vibrant red berries from a particular bush.

The Africano Coffee
During World War II, American soldiers in Italy were unable to drink the strong espresso. The solution was that they then added water and diluted the espresso, which then became known as the Americano. In South Africa, we often add milk to coffee to enhance the flavor of the brew. So we order an Americano and either ask for hot milk or cold milk with our Americano. To distinguish the drink, I have named the Americano the Africano.

Yesterday was Coffee on Park's First birthday. One year of brewing and providing coffee for many to enjoy.

This year has been a journey of growth, teaching me invaluable lessons about the art of brewing and the art of entrepreneurship.

Coffee was originally chewed, not sipped!
Before it became the beloved brew we know today, coffee beans were ground and mixed with animal fat by ancient Ethiopian tribes to create energy-rich snack balls. It wasn’t until much later that people began roasting and brewing the beans into a drink. In a way, coffee originated as an ancient energy bar.
