What happens to your rooibos tea before you get to enjoy it?

On fire 🔥🔥🔥

There was nothing more comforting than our Tiramisu S'more, created during the 2020 pandemic angst. The soft marshmallow twirl half covered in chocolate topped with cocoa nibs, with a creamy coffee mascarpone center sitting on a gluten-free cookie, hit all the sweet spots in a speechlessly satisfying way, if you managed to get your hands and lips on one!  It was a most heart-warming cheers to two soothing timeless classics, and a fun way to beat the gloom and doom. We know you want some more...

Breakfast has been a long-time cherished ritual 🍳

Besides our very popular and well-loved Croissant Benedict, we’ve been serving so many wholesome breakfast dishes over the years. We were first inspired by Montreal’s thriving breakfast, brunch and bagel scene and ate endless eggs Benedicts, waffles and pancakes on weekends. We continued to develop our taste for this treasured ritual through our travels around the globe. The Coco Safar breakfast experience is today a recollection of many delightful dishes, authentic ingredients, sweet and savory morning traditions we enjoyed discovering and devouring while globetrotting. Each dish we create tells a story of a special place we had the privilege to visit that galvanized our menu creativity.

1. Chicken bacon waffle inspired by cozy New England fall brunches

2. Croissant clafoutis influenced by New York’s SoHo groove and French vibe

3. French Toast showing off  London's contagious brunch energy

4. Bougatsa croissant remindful of our favorite custard pie street snack in Athens

5. Creamy yoghurt with authentic honey and pistachios, reminiscent of Istanbul markets

6. Croissants and coffee evocative of a Buenos Aires’ desayuno

7. Koulouri bagel with plain yogurt and poached eggs prompting Greek islands’ memories

8. Decadent breakfast sandwich sparked by Los Angeles DLA food market

9. Croissant Benedict delivered in Cape Town 2016-2026

10. Eggs Benedict served in Montreal in 2006 !

Don't black out with envy 😛

We were pleasantly surprised by how positively strong the reaction to our activated charcoal croissant was when it was first created and baked in 2021. Perhaps the maple cheesecake cream filling, maple glazing and crunchy walnuts had something to do with it? We definitely think so. This quintessential Canadian flavor combo paired so well with the slightly savory crispiness of the black croissant dough that this will forever remain a classic of our viennoiserie collection, next to be sampled in Paris later this year....

Life in lekker colors 😊

Our love story with colors is just as strong as our obvious passion for organic brown, beige and khaki tones! We've come to realize how much our chromatic palette of vibrant hues elevates and sets the tone to happy moments.

“Color is a power which directly influences the soul.”

Does it snow in 🇿🇦

That's a question we're often asked. You bet it does! Mostly between May and September during the southern hemisphere winter,  from the Cederberg and Overberg coastal mountains in the Western Cape to the Drakensberg mountains bordering South Africa and Lesotho, and even sometimes on Table Mountain too!

Johannesburg, which is located on a high-altitude plateau called the 'highveld', also get some  ❄️ from time to time, as in July 2023 on a very cold day when we unexpectedly received quite a bit of snow 🥶

Now you know.

Not your average classic Milk Tart!

At the height of the Biscoff Lotus cookie craze, we decided to honor the beloved South African dessert with a creamy custard filled croissant dipped in speculoos glaze and topped with home cooked speculoos crumble. It tasted insanely good, as you can imagine 😋

On pins and needles, literally.

Can't forget when our butterfly first materialized in metal pins and buttons! To see our infinity sign come to life in Cape Town was a thing of beauty. We are now on pins and needles as we plan our next Coco Safar Couture chapter in Paris 🦋

Doughnuts and beignets in one shape or another have been around for a very long time!

From "loukoumades' being awarded to champions of the original Olympics Games more than 2000 years ago to 'luqmat al-qadi' enjoyed in 13th century Bagdad, this is undoubtedly a sweet that has seduced many over centuries. We will celebrate this millennium rich tradition with our own creations of couture doughnuts in Paris coming later this year.

A trip around the world's Coffee Belt, a la Jules Verne.

This was in a nutshell the brief we gave local artists as part of creating an art installation for our new Sea Point flagship in 2017. We wanted a one of kind piece that would capture in a whimsical way where coffee grows in equatorial regions around the globe, which is traditionally between the Tropics of Cancer (Northern Hemisphere) and Capricorn (Southern Hemisphere).

What came out was a playful take on the spirit of Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires, illuminated by a hand-blown light fixture with moving planetary cogs - sitting on a nautical-inspired compass rose, part of what came to be known as the "lollipop" at the entrance of our store. Complemented with true vintage Coco Safar swinging tables on wrought-iron swivels, these soon became prized seats "in the house".

In our next chapter, we intend to take the spirit of this Jules Verne inspired creation along with us to Paris, where we were first influenced by his boundless imagineering.
