Saturday morning saw us host the Haval/GWM Owners Club - Southern Africa. 😏
We’re supposed to say the food, the conviviality, and the warming sun filtering through the tent were the highlights, but if you’re going to bring a Basset pup to the party, there’s only going to be one star.
Bugattis, Havals, Bassets...everyone and everything is welcome under the tree. See you soon.

We all know these are the Cape’s best months: wind-free, cool and crisp. Even our gardens seem to agree, offering one final flourish before winter settles in.
At Pepper Tree, we take the green theme a little further. We sell beautifully arranged bouquets, a selection of garden plants and — if you look up — botanical art lining the walls. And of course, our plant-based meals and ice creams. It only feels right.

Just outside our shop, you’ll find a shelf filled with books for sale, kindly donated by our regular guests. All proceeds go to Urban Animal, a local rehabilitation centre doing incredible work rescuing and rehoming pets in the area.
So, pick up a novel and make a donation at the till. If you’d like, feel free to bring in your old books, as well as blankets or clothing, and we’ll donate them on your behalf. Every little bit helps.

Almost everyone who visits Pepper Tree wonders about the intriguing shop across the road. That’s Magic Minerals, very much part of the Philadelphia family. Next time you pop in for a meal, spare some time afterwards to explore Rebecca and Aletta’s truly magical space. Actually, make that plenty of time with crystals, jewellery, clothing and curiosities, it’s a veritable Aladdin’s cave.
Aletta Steyn: “We grew up near Hardap Dam in Namibia, and I’ll never forget the first time my father took me on a rock-hunting expedition when I was nine years old. Like a magician, he broke open an amethyst geode to reveal a stunning purple landscape.”
Rebecca Minnaar: “The three rose quartz boulders from the Augrabies area are very special to me. They were placed in a circle around my husband and me during our wedding ceremony as symbols of our unconditional love.”

Are we seeing you today for a scone (or two)? Warm from the oven, topped with jam, cream, butter, and a little sweet-and-savoury moment. It is World Baking Day, which feels like the perfect excuse to talk about one of life’s greatest mysteries: who looked at a scone and thought, “You know what this needs? Cheese.” 😌
Scones originated in Scotland, with the first known printed reference appearing in a poem from 1513. Back then, they were simple oat bannocks, nothing like the fluffy beauties we know today.
Even the word “scone” some believe comes from the Dutch for “beautiful bread” (fair), while others say it was named after the Stone of Scone, where Scottish kings were crowned. And while the British are still debating whether jam or cream goes first, South Africans quietly added grated Cheddar and carried on. 😅

We received thoughtful messages from guests checking in on us during the stormy weather, especially asking if our big stretch tent is holding up 🤎☔
Happy to report: we’re safe, warm, and still serving up all the cosy Pepper Tree goodness. So if cabin fever is creeping in, come escape with us for a little while. Maybe give us a call before heading through as our cosy space fills up quickly on rainy days.

Ask our staff about personal favourites and a few always come up: the smoked salmon pasta, this much-loved gnocchi… and, of course, our pizzettas. 😋
Fridays are made for pizzettas 🍕 Case in point: the Epic Roasted Garlic & Chilli or the Marinated Chicken (we’re open until 20h00).
And if you’re planning ahead, we’ll also be open Monday, 27 April from 08:30 – 15:00 which is perfect for a catch-up over soups, pizzettas, and pastas.

If you’ve spent any time at Pepper Tree you’ll know the owl sculpture that watches over diners as they enjoy their meal. Look closely; it’s actually made of VW Beetle parts. It was created by Martiens Bekker many years ago and used to hang on the side of the old stable, announcing Pepper Tree to visitors to the town - ‘just look for the owl…’
Today Martiens works in Norway and the USA, a prominent jewellery maker and sculptor. His owl still watches over visitors... a little rustier, a little older, definitely wiser.

Saturday mornings are legendary here at Pepper Tree. The freshly baked breads & treats are out. 🤭 Fresh baking aromas mix with the citrus scents of grapefruit and lemon inside the shop.
Justin is probably feeding the birds, and cyclists are heading out, making way for the breakfast crowd, keen on Eggs Royal and a host of other treats, including — of course — scones with in-house mixed berry jam and cream. 😋 Because all’s well with the world.
Breakfast as a retreat: wonderful idea.

Breakfast at Pepper Tree is not something you casually squeeze in… it’s something you plan your morning around 😌 Served from 08h30–11h15, our Eggs Royale Roosterkoek brings together poached eggs, smoked trout, cream cheese, chives and a velvety hollandaise that quietly steals the spotlight.
Let’s just say… “a quick breakfast” has never looked (or tasted) this convincing 🤭
Just a heads up for the Easter weekend: we’ll be closed on Friday and Monday, but open and ready for you on Saturday and Sunday 😉

We hosted the Bugatti Grand Tour this week. The tour, an annual event for owners, has in previous years been in Europe, Utah, Sardinia and Morocco.
It’s all been very hush-hush, with the Pepper Tree visit planned months before.
Of course the team stepped up and had good fun. Turns out Bugatti owners love birdcall, hay bales excellent coffee, dairy free ice cream, those scones and that certain Pepper Tree something as much as the locals.
