After the Slow Market, our next big leap happened at the Vergenoegd Market, where the husband-and-wife team Jacky and Arlet played a major role in our journey.
We actually knew them long before they became market managers. They were traders themselves, and the very first time we tasted their food was at the Blaauwklippen Market — long before we ever imagined becoming market traders ourselves. Later, we crossed paths again at Slow Market, and by the time they were running Vergenoegd, we already admired them for both their food and their work ethic.
At this stage, we had left Slow Market, and Matthew was no longer involved there. We were eager — maybe even impatient — to add pizzas to our offering. But both Vergenoegd and Lourensford already had pizza vendors, so the door seemed firmly closed.
Then, suddenly, the pizza vendor at Vergenoegd left the market.
A moment of opportunity… and we grabbed it.
We asked Jacky and Arlet if we could bring our pizzas to Vergenoegd, and luckily for us, they were brave enough to say yes.
That “yes” became our next major turning point.
It helped shape the direction of our business and brought us one step closer to becoming the Corlie’s you know today.
Thank you, Jacky and Arlet, for believing in us — from the very beginning.
That was the second turning point in our journey… but the story didn’t stop there. Another big moment — and another special person — was just around the corner.

Corlie’s is 10 years old — unbelievable.
Looking back, there’s one person who played a huge role — perhaps without even realising it — in the early days of our journey: Matthew Kruger. Yes, that Matthew from Kruger & Tutu.
At the time, Matthew was the market manager at the Slow Market in Stellenbosch. Corlie phoned him, hoping for a spot to sell homemade dried pasta. Without hesitation, he said yes and welcomed us to the very next market.
Now, as you can imagine, dried pasta isn’t exactly unique. The shops are full of it. So our first market day was… well, a disaster. After a full day with only two bags sold, we realised it was back to the drawing board.
We shared our concern with Matthew, and — if I remember correctly — I told him that maybe we should just quit.
Matthew didn’t even pause. He said, “No, you mustn’t stop. Don’t sell the dried pasta — cook it at the market.”
That simple sentence catapulted us into the unknown world of entrepreneurship.
A week or two later, there we were: three-burner cast-iron gas stove, a pot of boiling water, homemade gnocchi, and freshly rolled pasta made right on the spot. And that’s how Corlie’s truly began.
If it weren’t for Matthew, Corlie’s Italian would never have come to life.
Thank you, Matthew.
Little did we know, Matthew was only the first. Several other incredible people played pivotal roles in what Corlie’s would become — and their stories are coming next.

🇮🇹 Panuozzo Napoletano – straight from Naples to your plate 🍅🥬🥖
Born in the heart of Campania, the panuozzo is Naples’ answer to the perfect street food. We make ours the traditional way: using our long-fermented pizza dough baked to a blistered crunch, then filled with fresh tomato, crisp greens, and Italian cured meats.
Light, rustic, and full of flavor – just like in Naples. ✨
👉 Available at Corlie’s Italian. Come taste the difference.

Join us this Saturday at 12:00 to celebrate our 10th anniversary!
@🎶 Live Music at Corlie’s Italian – A Full Circle Moment! 🎶
From humble beginnings at the Slow Market in Stellenbosch to our vibrant home in Paardevlei, Corlie’s Italian owes its first spark to Matthew Kruger — the one who nudged us to cook pasta instead of selling it dry. That moment in 2015 changed everything.
With Matthew’s encouragement, we cooked our first pasta, appeared on Brood en Botter with Bertus Basson, and started the journey that became Corlie’s Italian.
💫 Now, it’s our turn to celebrate him.
Join us for a very special performance by Kruger & Tutu – a soulful duo bringing their passion and rhythm to our restaurant.
