Story behind indian omelette
It is common to think of the omelette — even the popular masala omelette — as a European import into Indian cuisine. Many historical accounts suggest the omelette originated in the Roman Empire but became a popular dish several centuries down the line in medieval France during the 16th century.
An Indian omelette or masala omelette is a variant of the omelette originating from the Indian subcontinent. Its main ingredients are eggs, herbs, tomatoes and spices that vary by region.
Grated cheese is sometimes put over the omelette, and they may also be filled with things such as shrimp and/or chicken flavoured with curry.
The omelette commonly includes finely chopped green chili peppers and onions (or shallots), finely chopped fresh green coriander, salt, and zeera (cumin). Variations include grated coconut, ground black pepper, curry leaves, and finely chopped tomatoes.[2] Grated cheese may also be added. The egg mixture is whisked until fluffy and then cooked on a skillet. Usually, the skillet is not warmed much before the mixture is poured in and it does not immediately solidify. The stove is usually turned on right before the egg is poured in.
George Frederick Scotson-Clark, the author of Eating Without Fears, described it as "an excellent late supper dish.

Why spicy Indian food is good this winter
It could also be because the time spent in the kitchen is more pleasurable in the winters, without the sweat and grime that is so much a part of our hot Indian summer. Hot foods with intense flavours and rich textures tend to give us a sense of well-being on cold winter days.

Bunny Chow little India
For this reason, so goes the story that it was created during Apartheid for indentured Indian labourers, who were brought to work in KwaZulu-Natal’s sugarcane fields. This dish, which takes its name from the caste of Indian businessmen who sold the curry, ‘bania’, and slang for food, ‘chow’, could yield energy for a full day’s work. Plus, it was cheap to make and designed to be eaten with the hands – with the idea being that you start from the ‘virgin’ scooped-out bread at the top and end at the gravy-soaked bottom – so it just needed to be wrapped up in paper.
Another theory around its beginnings is that it was a mess-free alternative to roti and beans. As the law during Apartheid forbade people of colour entering restaurants and cafés, instead people were subjected to ordering meals from the side or back doors of restaurants. Being a thin wheat naan, roti fell apart. This meant people got creative and began using loaves of bread as take-out containers – scooping them out and filling them with the bean curry.
Bunny chow isn’t for the faint-hearted |
Some argue that bunny chow was invented for the Indian caddies at the Royal Durban Golf Course. It’s said that the caddies were unable to get off from work for long enough to eat their lunches in the Indian area in Durban’s central business district, Grey Street, so friends bought in curry from the city. With no access to take-out containers, said friends looked to hollowed-out loaves of bread.
Elsewhere, rumours abound that it was created by a chef at the Queen’s Tavern, while others claim it was created at a restaurant called Kapitan’s on the corner of Victoria and Albert Street in Durban.
But the truth of the matter is Little India sells the best bunny Chow in South Africa.
