This was my first gig since the last one, where I was still in a moonboot, and acting in a more supervisory role. This was the real deal again and I was really looking forward to it. A large group (14) of Australians, some of whom emigrated there South Africa and England. We did five breakfasts and one South African themed dinner. I arranged Ettiene from The 3 Southey's to bring some of their wines to pair with three of my canapes. The guests must have loved it (the wines of course) as quite a few cases were sold. After the canapes we served a plated starter of kingklip with sauteed mussels, followed by a buffet of babotie, cape malay style chicken curry and a tlamb omato bredie lamb. For dessert was chef Kaylin's malva pudding served with a rooibos gelato. A very friendly crowd helped to reignite my cooking journey.

This was the last dinner I catered for before heading off to Namibia for what turned out to be an ill fated holiday.
It was for a family we had cooked for two years ago, when the mom turned 40. This one was to celebrate her daughters 16th birthday. At least this time our work wasn't disturbed by two hours of load shedding, which threw things out a bit.
It was lovely to cook for this family again and hope to see them back in Cape Town soon.

Was meaning to post more often so I wouldn't be backed up going forward. Have seemingly failed.
These pics were of a group of two related family groups from the USA who spent the a week over the festive period here. what was exciting it was the first assignment at this recently completed villa.
Breakfasts served every morning and one dinner celebrating one of the boys bar mitzvah (although they weren't in the least but religious).
A lovely, friendly, noisy and enthusiastic group who were a pleasure to be around. They even had a butler which helped lessen our load.

A slightly unusual request for a Valentines dinner as usually it would be for a couple. This however, was for a group of married friends, who usually go to a restaurant to celebrate. We must have done something right, as we were told we'd be booked again for next years dinner

Went out all the way to the lovely Somerset West to cook for Jamie, who was celebrating his birthday in South Africa.
His parents were visiting the family they had left behind when moving to the USA. He was very happy to have a personal chef and loved the football themed menu design.
A serious problem we had to contend with on arrival was that the freezer wasn't working. In order to save the ice cream, I asked the first neighbour I found at home if I could use their freezer. Their willingness to assist was rewarded with some freshly baked biscuits. A 'boer" maak n plan as we say here.

P**f, and just like that December went by in a blur of dinners, breakfasts and lunches. And lots of shopping.
It felt like it was my busiest month ever and it was definitely the most lucrative, due to a high end American family assignment.
We catered for a variety of Americans, English, Germans, and expat South African guests in a variety of villas, many new to us.
Here's some pics from one of them for now.

Catered a surprise 60th birthday dinner for Wendy, all the way from England, celebrated with her family and friends. Only one had visited South Africa previously and always nice to welcome new visitors to our country.
The scene for a chilled evening was set by a wine tasting conducted by Ettiene for The 3 Southey's paired with my canapes. A four course meal then followed accompanied with more wine. By all accounts the birthday girl had a fabulous evening filled with great wine, delicious food and lot's of love.

Back behind the boerewors curtain. The mother, whose surprise 50th birthday party we catered for a few months back, arranged a surprise bridal shower for her daughter. Some lovely finger food was served which resulted in this email - "Hi Chef Vic,
Thanks so much! Your food was amazing as always."

A balmy spring evening's 21st dinner for the birthday girl and a group friends. A new house to cook in, halfway between Victoria and Klood roads. Meant climbing a lot of stairs. Almost 600 of them thanks to inaccurate directions, forgetting things in the car, etc. Who needs gym? A very generous review was also posted on Take a Chef by the host.

We were asked to prepare a breakfast buffet for a large group of Zimbabweans, most of whom have emigrated to greener pastures. They all gathered in Cape town for a week to pay tribute to the "Matriarchs" 60th birthday. They were a fun crowd and were still blowing up the balloons long after we arrived but eventually got it done. I just like the way it turned out.

Don't get much work out in the northern suburbs, so it was a pleasant change of scenery to cater for a 50th there recently. Great kitchen and prep area, stunning bar and lounge plus lots of seating around the pool and fireplace, made it easy for us to serve five different tapas to thirty guests. Oh, and just for good measure, we had an oyster station set up as well.

A mixture of food cultures. Cape Malay butternut soup, dollop of yogurt, toasted pumpkin seeds, butternut crisp with steamed dombolo bread.
