It’s been a FULL week.
Prelims are still doing their thing. Interhuis brought the energy. Everyone has had places to be, things to finish and alarms they would happily have ignored.
But Friday doesn’t need another serious speech.
Find your people. Laugh a little louder. Enjoy Tuisnaweek. Get outside. Have something good to eat. And please start with coffee.
The work will still be there.
Today, make a little room for FUN.
And to every Matric still writing: hang in there, Human. One paper at a time.

Some places become part of your story without you even realising it.
Since 2010, we’ve had the privilege of being part of the Hoër Jongenskool Paarl journey at Brug Street, from the early days of to serving through at the tuckshop since 2019.
And somehow, these boys climb under your skin.
Sometimes in the best way.
Sometimes while shoving in the tuckshop queue. 😏
We meet them as shy Grade 8s, heads down, still finding their place.
Then suddenly they’re Matrics. Taller. Louder. More confident. A little more facial hair. And getting ready to walk out those gates as young men.
In between, we get to see so much.
Friendships forming.
Dance plans being made.
Stories shared over food.
Laughter across the tables.
Big wins. Hard days. Growing up.
Yes, we serve food and coffee.
But after all these years, it’s never really just been about that.
It’s about being allowed to witness a small part of their journey and that’s something we’ll never take for granted.
Coffee is the drink. Humanity is the experience.

A little Thursday reminder: life is serious enough already.
There are exams to write. Deadlines to meet. Practices to get to. Results we care about. And yes, all of those things deserve effort.
But somewhere between prelims and Interhuis Touchies, there should still be room to laugh, play, chirp your mates and not take every single moment quite so seriously.
Work hard at the things that matter.
Then go have some fun.
Because being committed and enjoying yourself were never mutually exclusive.
And if your Thursday personality only arrives after coffee we completely understand.

Meet “The Beast.”
Most people only ever see what comes out the front, that beautiful espresso shot.
We’re slightly obsessed with what happens behind it.
Pressure. Temperature. Timing. Engineering. And a whole lot of copper doing its thing behind that very serious-looking armour.
Because great coffee isn’t an accident.
The Beast is one of our not-so-secret weapons, and we keep her tuned to perform because when it comes to coffee, “good enough” isn’t really our thing.
A little science.

And, naturally, a few Humans who get ridiculously excited about all of the above.

Belonging is one of those things you usually only notice when you really feel it.
In a classroom. In a team. On the sideline. In your house group. Around a table. Over coffee.
It’s not really about the place.
It’s about the people who make that place feel like yours.
And this week, with Interhuis kicking off with Cross Country, while our Matrics are still deep in prelims, that matters.
Show up for your people. Cheer louder. Sit with the friend having a rough day. Be the person someone else is glad to stand next to.
That’s community.
And if all of that happens over a good cup of coffee, even better.

We don’t really do “one-size-fits-all” events.
Sometimes BeHuman looks like a coffee cart under the trees.
Sometimes it’s a pop-up tuckshop next to the field.
Sometimes it’s a trailer, a queue, a bunch of hungry kids and a very busy coffee machine.
That’s the fun of it.

Your best doesn’t look the same every day. And it isn’t supposed to.
Some days you walk in feeling ready. Other days you’re tired, the brain is full, the week feels long and even the coffee has a fairly serious job description.
For our Matrics in the middle of prelims, this matters.
Your best today doesn’t have to look like your best from last week. It simply means giving what you have, where you are, with what’s in front of you.
And that applies far beyond an exam room.
To the teachers, parents, coaches, staff and every Human having a slightly-less-than-100% Tuesday: show up as you are. Give what you can. That counts.

Biltong and droëwors are one of those grab-and-go snacks that just make sense; protein-rich, filling and perfect for hungry Humans between classes, after training or when lunch still feels very far away.
And ours? We make it ourselves.
Not because we’re trying to become a butchery overnight, but because making our own helps us keep a closer eye on quality, flavour and cost, so we can keep offering a good-value protein option.
No fancy reinvention needed. Just proper biltong, proper droëwors and something substantial when the hunger hits.
Although we should probably warn you, the droëwors has a habit of disappearing rather quickly.

Monday doesn’t need all of you at once.
Especially when you’re a Matric staring down another week of prelims, a teacher juggling a hundred things, or a parent wondering how it can possibly only be Monday.
Forget the whole week for a minute.
Do the paper in front of you.
Finish the task that matters now.
Have the conversation.
Get through the next hour.
Then do it again.
Big weeks are rarely conquered in one heroic moment. They’re built from lots of small ones.
And somewhere between those small wins there is coffee. Definitely coffee.

One event. Two coffee spots. Plenty of Humans to keep caffeinated.
Saturday had us at Laerskool Slot van die Paarl Vroueoggend – Thia to the Tee at Perdeberg Winery, with Kraggies CC coffee flowing from two setups - our coffee bar and enjoying the spring sunshine outside.
Different spots, same mission: make sure a good cup of coffee is never too far away.
A beautiful venue, a morning full of women, conversations, laughter and lots of cups handed across the counter, exactly the kind of event we love being part of.

Friday. And maybe the reminder we need more than “TGIF.” 💙
For our Matrics, another week of prelims is behind them. For others, the Sevens weekend is about to begin. For parents, teachers and coaches, it’s been another week of driving, waiting, encouraging, feeding, worrying and showing up.
And somewhere in all that busyness, it’s very easy to wish the days away.
Just get through this exam.
Just get to the weekend.
Just get through Matric.
But these are the days.
The noisy ones. The exhausting ones. The coffee-fuelled ones. The ones filled with teammates, classmates, sidelines, school bags and people you see every single day.
One day, you’ll miss some of this.
So this weekend, be where your feet are. Cheer loudly. Laugh longer. Look around. Have the coffee.

Where it all began.
Before the busy mornings, the queues, the familiar coffee orders and the “you know what I have” regulars there was simply an idea that school coffee could be really good coffee.
Good beans. Proper equipment. Trained hands. And people who cared about every cup.
A lot has changed since this photo. We’ve learnt, tweaked, trained, tasted, upgraded and probably drunk far too much coffee along the way. But one thing hasn’t changed, we still believe the little things matter.
And sometimes, the little thing is a really good cup of coffee handed to you on a morning when you desperately need one.
Still learning. Still improving. Still brewing.

There’s something rather perfect about that happening on the first day of spring.
For our Matrics at Hoër Jongenskool Paarl today is another prelim paper but it’s also one of those little milestones that deserves to be noticed: the last Life Orientation exam they will ever write.
One more “last” in a year filled with them.
And perhaps the timing couldn’t be better. Because spring reminds us that endings and beginnings often sit right next to each other.
So write the paper. Tick the box. Walk out. And then get on with the much bigger subject … LIFE!
There’s no memo for that one, Humans. But thankfully, there is coffee.

Never underestimate the impact of the small things.

Some weeks ask a little more of you than others.
For some, it’s another prelim paper.
For others, it’s stepping onto a Sevens field.
For the teachers and coaches, it’s keeping everyone moving when the term is starting to feel very long.
And for the rest of us it might simply be getting through Thursday without asking if it’s Friday yet.
Not every lesson arrives when we expect it to. Some come from the classroom, some from the field, and quite a few come from the days that didn’t go according to plan.
That’s the thing about growing up and probably being grown-up too.
We’re all still learning.
We’re all still figuring some of it out.
And most of us are doing it with a cup of coffee somewhere nearby.
Here’s to the people who teach us, challenge us, back us and occasionally remind us to try again.

But not everything from a season disappears with the final whistle.
The discipline.
The early mornings.
Learning to lose well.
Learning to win well.
Showing up when you’re tired.
Being part of something bigger than yourself.
And behind so many of those lessons are the people who quietly keep teaching them.
The coach who expected a little more.
The teacher who wouldn’t accept “good enough”.
The person who noticed when something wasn’t quite right.
The one who believed in you, even when you were making it particularly difficult to do so.
To our teachers and coaches: thank you.
The boys may forget a score, a homework assignment or perhaps even quite a lot of what you said but the really good lessons have a habit of sticking.
And to the teachers currently carrying everyone through prelims, we suspect your coffee deserves to be a little stronger this week.
