Mandalas and Us
So this guy Ashley walks in as we are kitting out Vadivelu nearly 3 years ago, and says he has the perfect artwork for our modern quirky Indian space.
Out of his boot he produces a big wooden âmandalaâ.
In the broader meaning of the word, a mandala is a spiritual Hindu symbol, representing The Universe. We thought that sounded pretty cool.
But Ashleyâs mandala was Indian With Attitude, this incredible, intricate piece of work, forming a massive spiderâs web of string in an array of colours, hooked around hundreds of tiny nails. Green in the morning, pink in the evening, we had to have it on our wall!
And then a second arrived, and a third, and a fourth, and right then we became a gallery for his work, just like we are today!
Free mandala viewing for all guests at Vadivelu.

Tigers & Us
Ever wondered why we have a few tigers dotted (or striped!) around the restaurant, right from the moment you walk over our big cat hand-painted on our entrance floor?
In Hinduism, the tiger symbolises strength, royalty, fearlessness, and regal power.
The tiger is associated with the powerful goddess Durga. A popular Hindu goddess, she was a fierce warrior who was believed to control all the powers in the universe. She was often depicted riding on a tiger with weapons in hand, ready to overthrow the forces of evil. Durga and her tigers were considered determined and courageous, able to defeat all obstacles and overcome any challenges.
At Vadivelu, we are slightly in awe of tigers so, to keep on their right side, we even had a tiger portrait commissioned.
Come and see for yourself!

Whatâs with all the peacock feathers?
Anyone know why we have so many of them around Vadivelu?
Not only are they colourful and pretty, peacock feathers have a special place in Hindu culture being strongly linked to Lord Krishna, a major deity, who wears them in his crown.
The peacock feather signifies good fortune, protection from evil, wisdom and prosperity. No wonder we have so many in the restaurant.
The perfect vibe-setters for a night of great food, warm company, and a little curry magic.
Come see for yourself.

Chicken Tikka Masala, the Crowd-Pleaser with a Plot Twist!
Tikka Masala isnât actually Indian, it was invented in the UK, for Brits who wanted more gravy on their grilled chicken!
The story goes that in the 1970s, a customer complained that their chicken tikka (a dry, grilled chicken dish of Indian and Pakistani origin) was too dry. The chef improvised by adding a creamy, tomato-based sauce (some accounts mention condensed tomato soup) to satisfy the customer's desire for "gravy".
Weâre keeping the spirit, turning up the spice, and serving it Vadivelu-style. Creamy. Tangy. Charred. Ridiculously moreish.

What people say
Vadivelu, located on Kloof Street in Cape Town, is an Indian restaurant that has been receiving mixed reviews from various sources. Unfortunately, there is no information available yet on the most recent reviews of the restaurant.
However, according to a review published in the Cape Times in 2019, Vadivelu offers a "wide range of authentic Indian dishes" and "excellent service." The reviewer also praised the restaurant's "relaxed atmosphere" and "reasonable prices."
On the other hand, a review published in Eat Out magazine in 2018 was less enthusiastic about Vadivelu. The reviewer noted that while some dishes were "delicious," others were "disappointing" and lacked flavor. The reviewer also criticized the restaurant's slow service and high prices.
Online reviews of Vadivelu are similarly mixed. On TripAdvisor, some customers have praised the restaurant's "amazing food" and "friendly staff," while others have complained about long wait times and inconsistent quality.
One customer commented on Zomato that they had a great experience at Vadivelu: "The food was delicious and authentic, and the staff were very friendly and attentive." Another customer on Yelp, however, was disappointed with their meal: "The chicken curry was dry and lacked flavor. I wouldn't recommend this place."
Overall, it seems that opinions on Vadivelu are divided. While some customers have had positive experiences at the restaurant, others have been less impressed with its food and service. It would be interesting to see more recent reviews to determine if any changes have been made to address these criticisms.
