Dear Friends,

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing."*l - George Bernard Shaw

Right now, the world feels like it's running on strong coffee and very little sleep. Wars. Elections. Markets swinging wildly. Everyone has an opinion, and the news cycle never
seems to exhale.

So let's talk about something reliable - Dinner. Next week's Supper Club is built on food that steadies the ship: slow-simmered comfort, confident flavour, a touch of heat, something fresh to keep it balanced, and a final flourish that carries you to Friday feeling properly fed.

Whether you're heading home from meetings or plotting a weekend escape, let us take dinner off your to-do list with dishes that invite people to gather and remind us that some things can still make sense. Add a soup for cooler evenings, one of our famous Roast Chicken Pies for backup, or something indulgent for dessert. Lighting a candle and passing the bread might not fix the world, but it reminds us what really counts.

Our medium-sized portions feed 5-6, a large 8-10. While we always prepare a few extra meals, it's best to place orders at least a day ahead to avoid disappointment.

Thank you for backing The Supper Club. Every order helps keep the pots simmering, the lights on, and our small local kitchen doing big-hearted work. We're truly grateful you're part of this table.

With SONA around the corner, we're bracing for a full menu of promises, forecasts and carefully plated optimism. While politicians promise jam tomorrow and gravy sometime next year, we prefer to stick to a simpler brief. No spin, no slogans. Just good, honest food, flavours that speak plainly and actually deliver.

As the global fallout from Epstein's "Dossier of Disgrace" continues to ripple outward, politicians duck questions and billionaires quietly disappear from guest lists. The Supper Club, meanwhile, takes a more transparent route. No podiums, no dodging, no deflection, and no redactions. Just generous family-sized meals that tell the truth and leave nothing suspicious on the plate. Please see below for next week's meal selector.

With Valentine's days away, consider this permission to opt out of the spectacle. No imported roses, prix-fixe panic or grand gestures built for Instagram. Sometimes romance is quieter. A great meal waiting at home or a breakfast at your favourite Kloof Street corner cafΓ©, where they already know your order. Simple. SIncere. Far more satisfying.

From our kitchen to yours, thank you for your continued love and support.

See you at the table,

Your Liquorice & Lime Family

Dear Friends,

"After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one's own relations."
- Oscar Wilde

It's been a heavy summer week.
The weather and the wind keep flirting with the "too much" setting, while wildfires leave their mark on both the landscape and our collective nerves. When mountains burn and the air fills with soot and embers, we are reminded how fragile our patch of paradise truly is.

Beyond our shores, the world feels restless too. Global leaders gather in places like Davos, debating power, resources, borders and futures. Headlines swing between politics, posturing and uncertainty. Big conversations, loud voices, and very little calm. It's easy to feel small in the face of it all.

Food has always been an anchor in unsettled times. Not a distraction, but a reassurance. A daily act of care. A way to restore energy and faith, offering comfort, and creating moments of pause when everything feels relentless.

Amid the heated geopolitics, here's a dish for us: simplicity with purpose. Think salads that refresh, hearty grains that satisfy, and family-sized meals prepared with care and intention. Next week's dinner lineup leans into vibrant freshness, light fare with depth of flavour, designed for long summer evenings and lingering dinners on the patio. Please see below for next week's selection, available exclusively through The Supper Club.

Thank you for continued support & love.

Stay cool, stay fed and remember: great food brings us together near and far.

With warmth (of the good kind).

Dear Friends,

Welcome back, food lovers.
The ovens are fired up, lunchboxes are back in rotation, and someone, somewhere is asking - What's for dinner?

January has a habit of overthinking itself. Personally - I prefer strong coffee, good intentions, and quietly getting on with it. Not a dramatic overhaul, not a whistle blown at dawn, just another chance to do things a little better than yesterday. Strength doesn't always arrive with a roar. Sometimes it shows up as consistency. Turning up. Trying again.

I've found food works the same way. You don't need fireworks on a plate to feel restored. You need nourishment, care, and flavours that compliment and work together. Food that sustains and heals you.

The Supper Club meals for the next week (please find πŸ‘‡πŸΌ) are built with this in mind. Comforting without being complacent. Thoughtful without being fussy. The kind of dishes that fit neatly into real lives, busy days, shared tables, and the occasional quiet moments as a family.

This year, let us cook with confidence and eat with intention. Utilise quality ingredients, try new flavours & revisit old favourites. Support the growers, the makers, the hands behind the plates. Share what works, laugh at what doesn't and remember that even the simplest meals can be extraordinary when made with care and shared with the right people.

Here's to full plates, happy bellies and moments that matter. Pull up a chair, bring the kids, and let's enjoy this New Year - one great meal at a time.

Thank you for your ongoing love & support. Continue to be Kind, Keep Safe & Be Lekker.

People have been baking for thousands of years, in fact the oldest oven dates back over 6500 years. Since 2012 - World Baking Day - has been observed on the 3rd Sunday in May, with the intention of inspiring all people to try their hand at baking and to then gift the resultant bakes to family, friends, co-workers or neighbours. Dear Friends,

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!! TO .......
young mothers
old mothers
grandmothers
step mothers
biological & non-biological
those with babies in heaven
those with mothers in heaven
those who have stepped into the role
those who have a mothering heart.

And what a week it was!! On a positive note, the world welcomed a newly elected Pontiff - Pope Leo XIV. While on the flip side, it appears the decades old tension between India & Pakistan has escalated, with them appearing to be on the brink of a fully-fledged war. 😰 As another conflict erupts, I can only reflect on and appreciate how blessed we are to call this beautiful country our home. πŸ™πŸΌ

It's only fitting to give a shout-out to my own Mom on Mother's Day - she was a seriously gifted cook and a brilliant baker. Here is her tried & perfected Gluten-free Orange & Almond Cake. Hands down - one of my favorite bakes as it stays fresh for days and can be served hot or cold with whipped cream or mascarpone:-

Ingredients:
2 Navel Oranges
6 Lg Eggs
1 Cup Castor Sugar
250g Almond Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
75g Flaked Almonds

Method:
1) Wash & trim ends off the oranges. Place in suitable pot & cover with water.
2) Bring to boil & then reduce heat & allow to simmer for 2 hours. Top up water as required to ensure oranges remain covered.
3) Remove oranges from liquid & allow to cool. Chop (skin & all) into smaller pieces & remove any pips or pith.
4) Place orange pieces into a food processor, pulse on high until a smooth, lump-free paste is formed.
5) Grease a 22cm spring-form baking tin & line bottom with baking paper.
6) In a large mixing bowl - beat eggs & sugar until pale & frothy. (4min)
7) Add almond flour, baking powder & orange paste - fold together until well mixed.
8) Pour batter into the prepared baking tin, then sprinkle top with flaked almonds.
9) Bake at 180deg for 55 -60min - until golden brown & cooked through.
10) Switch off oven, leaving cake inside to cool down completely.
11) Remove from baking tin & dust with icing sugar just before serving.

Another great way to celebrate the moms in your life is to spoil them a delicious, fully prepared convenience meal from The Supper Club. Please see πŸ‘‡πŸΌ for next weeks choice of freshly prepared, family-sized meals. Be sure to order at least a day or 2 in advance so as to avoid disappointment.

Dear Friends,

If you're planning a getaway over the holidays, a "staycation" might be more sensible. While SA benefits from the 90-day pause on tarrif increases, receiving just the standard baseline increase of 10% - all this flip-flopping has global markets spooked and this is affecting the value of the Rand. Despite the showdown seeming to be between the USA & China - the entire world is concerned - because when elephants fight, it's the grass that gets trampled. And in this battle - we are the grass. 🀨

Chocolate has been synonymous with Easter for centuries, and while this is not a free pass to overindulge - it's worth noting that there are some great health benefits associated with chocolate - in particular dark chocolate. This _Deliciously Decadent Chocolate Tort_ is the perfect Easter Indulgence:-

Ingredients:
200g Best Quality Dark Chocolate
50g Butter
3 x Free-range Eggs (Separated)
50g Castor Sugar
50ml Fresh Cream
115g Ground Almonds

Method:
1) Over low heat, slowly melt chocolate in a double boiler whilst stirring.
2) Whisk egg yolks with castor sugar until light and pale in colour. (About 6min)
3) Allow chocolate mix to cool before adding to the creamed yolks & stir well.
4) Add cream and almond flour & stir.
5) Use a clean bowl to whisk egg whites until stiff peak stage.
6) Gently fold whites into the chocolate mix - a quarter at a time.
7) Pour batter into a greased and lined baking tin & bake at 180deg for 25-30min.
8) Allow to cool completely before removing from tin.
*Note: Dust with icing sugar and serve thin wedges of rich & gooey torte with whipped cream and fresh raspberries.

Great cooking takes time & effort, but even the most dedicated and accomplished cooks deserve time off. As is customary over the holidays -
The Supper Club will be closed for just 2 weeks, starting this Friday, 18/04 and will re-open on Monday, 05/05. Please findπŸ‘‡πŸΌnext weeks menu of delicious family-sized convenience dinners.

Liquorice & Lime will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday & Easter Monday, but will trade as normal on Saturday 19/04 & all other days as of 7am. Feel free to pop in for the best breakfast in town and fear not - you are still able to order Chicken Pies, Boboties, Quiches & Cakes over this time.

For many people, this time of year holds particular religious significance - may it be a safe, reflective & meaningful time for all.

Thank you for your continued love & support πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ½ - we greatly appreciate every order.

How are we already in the 2nd quarter of this year when I am still entering 2024 as the date on most documents? 😱

Locally, April is considered to be the start of autumn - by far my favourite of the seasons. Nights get longer, temperatures cooler, and of course, the ambers, reds & yellows of the trees and vineyards are indescribably beautiful. This is also the best time of year to entertain - be it an impromptu get-together around the fire-pit with red wine & marshmallows, book club with the girls or a movie night with mates - allow The Supper Club to look after the cooking while you take control of the fire and the wine.
Please see πŸ‘‡πŸΌ for next weeks selection of delicious convenience dinners. Our made-with-love meals are generous enough to provide for an entire family, often with leftovers. πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸ³πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸ³

As temperatures begin to cool, frozen desserts make way for comfort puddings and let's be honest - not much can stand up against a homemade Blueberry Crumble. 500g Fresh Blueberries
135ml Apple Sauce
2 tsp Castor Sugar
2 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 tsp Fresh Lemon Zest

Ingredients:- (Crumble)
700g Cake Flour
2 Tbsp Quick Oats
3 Tbsp Brown Sugar
3 Tbsp Soft Butter
ΒΌ tsp Ground Cinnamon
1 tsp Salt

Method:-
1) Rinse blueberries and place at bottom of oven-proof pie dish.
2) Mix apple sauce with lemon zest, castor sugar & vanilla - then spread evenly over blueberries.
3) Into a mixing bowl - sift flour, cinnamon & salt. Add oats, brown sugar & butter, now rub with fingertips until crumbly.
4) Spread crumble over blueberry & apple mix. Bake at 180 deg for 15min until golden brown.

*Note:- Substitute some of the blueberries with other fresh seasonal berries. Serve warm with fresh cream, ice-cream or custard.

Thank you for your continued love & support.
